Reminders

This week a new Speller's Choice Menu will be coming home. Please remember they only have the option to do Spelling City ONCE during the week to count towards homework. I am going to have the kiddos set up their spirals a little different this month, as I was not completely satisfied with how it was working out for September. Spelling is more of an independent study, so it is important that they are working with their words each night.
Please remember: ALL Spelling homework should be in their spirals. You should not be signing a piece of paper with nothing but the date written on it. Thank you!

Also, ALL Science papers that are returned to the kids should remain in their folders - even if they have a grade on them. We are developing "working notes" and study guides throughout the chapter. These papers are a great tool for review - for the current chapter, as well as for the final exam.

:)

Happy Reading,

Grades

Hello All -
I just want to take a moment to mention that 5 week reports will be coming out VERY soon! With that being said, any papers that come back to the students with a "Please Fix" written on them is a chance for the kids to raise their grade. THEY KNOW THIS. I mention it just about every time I return papers to them. I feel that it is important for them to see their mistakes, and then give them an opportunity to correct. IF they turn the papers back into me, and their answers are correct, I raise their grade to 80%. On the flip side of this, I also have explained  that I will not hunt them down for their corrections. If I am going to give them this opportunity, then I would really like to see them taking on the responsibility to help boost their average.
I do not do this for every assignment. Please check for the "please fix" on any papers that are handed back.
I understand that things are crazy at the beginning of the year, but now that we are winding down and settling into a routine, I am hopeful that the students (with some encouragement from you!) will really run with this opportunity!

science

As it turns out, 40 minutes was not enough time to complete the test today - which I anticipated for our first one. Therefore, I have slotted the first half of our Science time on Monday to complete the test. The kids were very nervous, but as they were working, they seemed to relax a bit!
Have a fantastic weekend!

FYI

I will not be in on Thursday due to my son being sick. I feel terrible missing the day before the Science test- but I know they will do great with the substitute. They are a fantastic bunch and I'm so proud of all their hard work thus far! I am hoping to pop in before dismissal, but if it doesn't work out, please make sure they get a good night's sleep and some extra carbs for breakfast! Feel free to call me if you have any questions or concerns.

Happy Studying,
Mrs. Rosenberg

Science Test

Please be aware that the students should be reviewing every night for their upcoming Science assessment. It CAN count toward their 20 minutes of reading. Understanding the vocabulary is going to make an impact on how well they comprehend the reading material. Feel free to quiz them periodically over the next two days on their definitions!

I have sent home a Study Guide. A few students were expecting their study guide to consist of all the questions that I will have on the test. That is not the case. BUT, if they know all their vocabulary and can accurately describe the parts of a plant cell and the digestive system - they will do fine!

Happy Reading,

Test Update

After some careful thought, I have decided to postpone the MATH test until MONDAY. We just are not in a place where I feel 100% confident that everyone is fully prepared for their first major assessment. Thank you for your cooperation!

Upcoming Tests

Math: we will be having our Chapter 1 test on Thursday! Please make sure you are reviewing the homework each night.

Science: We will have our Chapter 1 test on Friday! Please be reviewing vocabulary and Circle Map notes EACH night. I will be sending home a study guide later in the week and we will be reviewing together in class as well.

I try to avoid formally assessing the kids in more than one core subject on the same day. However, our weekly Selection Test for Reading will remain on Friday as well. This, however, is an open book test.

Happy Reading!

Happy First Day!

It was a whirlwind morning, but everything went smoothly! The students were FANTASTIC!
We organized our material, labeled our folders and notebooks, completed a journal entry, introduced the new Spelling list, breezed through a Power Point presentation, and recieved the first two assignments!

We also played around a bit with Spelling City. You can find the link below. I encouraged the students to explore this at home, as next week it will be part of their weekly assignment.

www.spellingcity.com

The second assignment was writing a letter to me to introduce themselves. They were instructed to include things such as their likes/dislikes, sports they play, favorite authors/genres, and what they are looking forward to the most this year in fifth grade.
