It's hard to believe we are already into 2014! I am so pleased with all the hard work and dedication the students have displayed this year.
A few things we will be working on in the coming weeks:
Science - We will continue to explore ecosystems, food chains, food webs and food pyramids. Additionally, we will begin our first Web Quest. I am doing my best to see to it that the children are able to complete much of this project in class. However, there may be some times that they will have to do a bit of research at home as well.
From there we will move on to studying Biomes and how human interactions can cause changes in ecosystems.
Math - Currently, we are working on estimating, adding, and subtracting decimals. They are doing great! We will then begin multiplying and dividing decimals, and move on to an introduction to fractions. The students will have several opportunities to work on these skills independently and in small groups during our Guided Reading/Center time.
Reading/Writing/ELA - The focus/skills for this unit will be finding and determining themes in fables and fairytales, and fictional narrative writing pieces. In addition to that, we will continue to work towards mastering the skill of picking out main idea/supporting details and summarizing.
I am encouraging the children to check out different versions of familiar fairy tales and compare them to modern fairy tales that they are interested in. As we will reading these types of books during our Read to Self and Read to Someone literature centers, please feel free to send any of these books in to share. (Make sure your name or your child's name is written somewhere in the book so that these treasures may be returned to the proper owner!)
Stay warn and safe in this bitter cold January!
Happy Reading,
Mrs. Rosenberg
